A short journey up the coast from our holiday cottages, Bridlington, lies the popular tourist town of Whitby. Whitby is a great family day out, boasting an ancient abbey, dramatic coastline and deliciously fresh fish and chips. However, Whitby is also one of the starting points for a trip on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway, frequently voted as the best heritage railway in the country.
The NYMR has two main routes that cross the beautiful North Yorkshire Moor National Park. The first runs from Pickering to Whitby, taking in the picturesque villages of Grosmont, Newton Dale, Levisham and Goathland, which acted as the setting for the fictional village of Aidensfield in ITV's drama 'Heartbeat'.
The second route is known as the Esk Line which also takes in Whitby and Grosmont and then travels across the national park via Glaisdale, Danby and Castleton, before ending its journey in Battersby, in itself a popular are for walkers and hikers. Full details of routes, ticket prices and information about the various steam trains that call the NYMR home can be found by visiting the website at www. nymr.co.uk
